EATING DISORDER TREATMENT FOR LGBTQIA+

You are safe and seen here

With a third of our clients being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, providing inclusive and affirming treatment is important to us so you can feel welcomed and cared for.

Affirming care

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community have a high risk of developing an eating disorder. For example, gay and bisexual men have a 10 times higher rate of disordered eating compared to the general population. LGBTQIA+ youth with an eating disorder reported nearly 4 times greater odds of attempting suicide in the past year compared to those who never had, or suspected they had, an eating disorder, according to The Trevor Project. Unfortunately, members of this community are also more likely to experience barriers to treatment than the general population, making the situation even more serious.

At Monte Nido, you’ll experience environments where you can feel comfortable expressing your full self. We use your appropriate pronouns and honor chosen or updated names. Our nutrition counseling supports gender-affirming medical interventions, we provide mindful rooming options at our inpatient and residential programs, and we provide trauma-informed care that caters to LGBTQIA+ communities.

FAQs about eating disorders and LGBTQIA+

Having questions is natural, we’re here to help you find answers and feel confident in your ability to recover.
How do you ensure that treatment plans are tailored to LGBTQIA+ individuals?

Our treatment plans address each person's unique needs, including those specific to the LGBTQIA+ community. We consider your personal experiences, gender identity, and trauma history when designing your treatment plan. Additionally, we have LGBTQIA specialty virtual program which you can learn more about here.

Does Monte Nido have any research on LGBTQIA+ and eating disorders?

Our research findings indicate that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience increased rates of trauma and more severe eating disorders, depression, and anxiety symptoms. These insights inform our trauma-informed treatment approaches to address the distinct needs of those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Are your staff members trained in LGBTQIA+ issues and cultural competency?

Yes, our full team is dedicated to ongoing training in cultural competency and LGBTQIA+ issues to provide the most knowledgeable and understanding care possible. We believe that positive attachment, modeling, and community help people heal.

How do you create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ clients?

We prioritize creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere through our gender-affirming approach, diverse staff, and strict anti-discrimination policies. Our goal is to ensure that all clients feel respected and supported throughout their treatment journey.

Our care includes all-gender bathrooms at many programs, body image care that acknowledges gender dysphoria, and mindful rooming options at our inpatient and residential programs. We are committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care that addresses the unique needs of this diverse community.

What happened to the Virtual Rainbow Road Program?

We've renamed the Rainbow Road program to "Monte Nido Virtual LGBTQIA+ Treatment Program" to make it easier for everyone to find and understand the support we offer, especially for the LGBTQIA+ community. Although the name has changed, the great care and support you expect from us hasn’t. This new name just helps people find the right help faster.
