EATING DISORDER TREATMENT FOR ADOLESCENTS

Growing up is complicated; eating disorders make it even more challenging

It is no secret that adolescence can be a stressful time. To cope with uncomfortable shifts in relationships and external appearance, many experiment with disordered eating behaviors, further complicating typical developmental changes to body chemistry and composition.

Comprehensive care

We’re here to equip you and your family with the skills necessary to best help your child thrive.

Monte Nido offers one of the nation’s only full continuums of care for adolescents of all genders with eating disorders. We provide inpatient, residential, day (PHP & IOP), and virtual programs tailored specifically to adolescents and teens to meet their unique needs.

No matter the level of care, you and your family will be involved in the treatment process. We integrate the highest standards of care to actively include you in helping your child reduce disordered eating behaviors and resume healthy development. Despite the challenges faced by the entire family during this process, evidence shows its effectiveness. Our independent study of adolescents completing our intensive outpatient program reveals that 75% to 90% maintained medical recovery after their five-year follow-up.

"My step-daughter is a different child than she was before she went to [Monte Nido] Walden. Since going through Walden’s ARFID IOP, she has a huge list of foods that she is able to eat and she is willing to try new things. She even had cake on her birthday for the first time!"

FAQs about eating disorders and adolescents

Having questions is natural, we’re here to help you find answers and feel confident in your ability to recover.
How do you involve caregivers in the treatment process?

We provide family programs, that  help you and your child through and after treatment achieve and sustain recovery. We integrate training, resources, weekly support groups, and counseling for caregivers so you can heal alongside your child. Parents will participate in individual and group therapy sessions with our specialized eating disorder clinicians and team. Through these family resources, you will build awareness about eating disorder signs and symptoms, treatment protocols, support strategies, and more that can be used in daily life to strengthen your relationship and your child’s well-being.

What does treatment for my child look like?

The structure of their care will vary depending on their level of treatment. However, your child’s treatment will be integrated with personalized clinical and nutritional care and comprehensive academic and family support. You can also expect to participate in our Family Programming that provides psychotherapeutic support and comprehensive education, empowering families with the knowledge and tools to support recovery.

To start the process, you and your child will be guided through the admissions process where initial information is collected, there will then be a medical intake assessment for our clinicians to determine and recommend the appropriate level of care for your child. We will work with your insurance and will inform you of your coverage of care so you have a thorough understanding of the finances of their care upfront.

At admissions and after, you will have close communication and direct access to your child’s treatment team. Depending on the location and level of care, from here you will participate in weekly on-site or remote family therapy and onsite multi-family group, biweekly parent education program every other weekend, and participate in a psychoeducational seminar, parent-only support group, nutrition planning, meal preparation, portioning, and behavior management skills.

I’m worried about my child’s health. Will I learn more about the medical side of my child’s disorder so I know what to do after treatment?

Medical education is crucial, and our nursing staff and physicians discuss eating disorder impacts on the body, such as bone health, cardiac and brain effects, fertility, and developmental challenges. Our psychiatrists partner with families to find the right medication, providing extensive education on risks, benefits, and alternatives.

As discharge approaches, families are closely involved in planning to ensure a smooth transition and continued progress.
