WHAT TO EXPECT

Advantages of Residential Treatment for adolescents

Your child will be surrounded by a consistent, compassionate care team that supports every aspect of their recovery - from medical and nutritional needs to emotional and mental well-being. While living in a comforting, home-like environment, they’ll follow a personalized treatment plan designed to help them heal, grow, and build a foundation for long-term recovery.

Frequent medical support

Clients are seen at least once a week by a physician or nurse practitioner for standard assessments to track and support treatment outcomes. Many eating disorders can cause health complications that require specialized treatment, like anemia, or malnutrition, which our medical team can evaluate and monitor during treatment.

Expert psychiatric care

Clients are seen at least weekly by a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

24/7 nursing

Our round-the-clock nursing staff are focused on providing the most effective, ethical care. A number of our locations can also provide lifesaving feeding tubes as needed.

Personable counseling

Our master’s-level or higher therapists can provide individual and small group therapy 7 days a week.

Full-time registered dietitians

Clients meet with our RD’s one-on-one for nutritional education and meal support.

Ongoing support

Our team will be there to help our clients when needed, day or night.

Family Involvement

As a parent or caregiver, you play a vital role in your child’s recovery.  Our day treatment program includes dedicated family therapy—through individual family  sessions and multi-family groups—so you can better understand your child’s experience and how to support their healing journey.

Comprehensive discharge planning

As your child prepares to step down, we’ll work closely with you and the outpatient team to create a clear plan that supports their long-term recovery at home and beyond.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ADOLESCENT CARE

Is Residential eating disorder treatment right for my child?

Adolescent Residential eating disorder treatment is helpful when full-time care is necessary. During your admissions process, we will be able to determine if Residential Living would be best for your child's recovery.

Teens and pre-teens

Teens and pre-teens have different needs than adults. That’s why our residential treatment programs are designed specifically for this age group—focusing on emotional development, reducing eating disorder behaviors, and supporting a return to age-appropriate growth. Our team also partners closely with caregivers to ensure the whole family is supported throughout the recovery journey.

All genders and all background

We provide gender-affirming, culturally aware, and trauma-informed care so that everyone feels welcome and safe and can focus on healing.

All diagnoses

We treat all eating disorders and co-occurring conditions. Our Residential Living treatment programs provide clients with structured, 24/7 access to care.

What should my teen pack for residential eating disorder treatment?

Admissions will advise you and your loved one with the most up to date packing list before you join us. However, here are items to remember:

Clothing: We suggest you bring casual, comfortable clothing as well as layers to accommodate different temperatures. This includes 1-2 weeks’ worth of comfortable clothing, undergarments, pajamas, two sets of clothes for yoga, comfortable shoes, and slippers. Some programs may have a pool, and usage is determined by the local team. Please check with admissions if packing a swimsuit is advised. You will be able to use the laundry facilities weekly.

Medications: Bring at least a 30-day supply of current medications or vitamins in original prescription containers. Our medical provider will write any additional prescriptions as needed. If a medication you take is difficult to find, notify us before admission so we can plan.

Personal Items: Bring toiletries (e.g., shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and brush) and cosmetics you use daily. You may also bring hair styling tools, razors, tweezers, and nail accessories. For the safety of all clients, some items may be held when you are not using them.

Valuables: Money may be needed for outings when they occur. Bringing a credit card is preferable for your safety, but you may bring a small amount of cash if you do not have access to one.

Self-Care: Bring things that help ground and comfort you (e.g., musical instruments, coloring books, religious texts, a favorite blanket).

Technology: You may bring your cell phone, but please note that you will not have access to it unless there is an emergency or potentially until the end of your stay when the team deems it appropriate.

Personal Identification: You will need a copy of your driver’s license, passport, or other ID card, as well as a copy of your insurance card.

School Materials: Adolescent clients will have school 5 days per week, so bring whatever you need for current courses (e.g., books, laptop, or tablet). We partner with Learn Well to meet your educational needs year-round. You will have access to your laptop or tablet only during school times.

What NOT to Bring: food items, towels, bedding, sentimental or highly valuable items (e.g., expensive jewelry or electronics). We cannot be responsible for lost items. Please also arrange to be dropped off at the treatment center, as you are not permitted to drive and park your car onsite during the duration of your stay.

Visitors can bring you additional approved items, or you can purchase additional items online or on outings as needed.

If you have more questions or hesitations, we’re here to help. Please contact our admissions team at 888.228.1253 or fill out the form, and someone from our team will reach out to you soon to assist you.
